The Long Thread of Memory

Rita Zepf found the inspiration for her textile and textual works in 1986 on a market place in Sochi by the Black Sea, in what was then the Soviet Union. A man was pedalling at a sewing machine, embroidering freely without using a presser foot.

Now the trained textile artist also works free hand. Her works are based on photographs or drawings, the motifs graphically reduced. Hand-dyed cloth is the base for stitched works with and without lettering. Defects are not eliminated but seamed up. A spun tissue emerges on damask with coloured papers, its threads left to hang when the work is done, now an integral part of the composition.
