Zagaa

Painting

just tradition?

The Mongolian artist Zagaa works on canvas, creating broad patches of colour in transparent blocks of acrylic paint and washed ink. With a thin brush, Zagaa translates themes and symbols from nomadic culture into abstract forms and novel compositions. The sense of depth in space created in traditional Mongolian painting plays an important part for her. Her principal motifs are moving horses, especially black horses from different perspectives, and women with features of traditional Mongolian costume riding through inner worlds or extraordinary settings.
