Wolf U. Rabe

Digital Woodcuts

For Wolf U. Rabe, photography today is dominated by technology, and the results are over-perfected, sharply overdrawn, oversaturated in colour, and often the look is more realistic than reality itself. He responded with a counter-strategy, a new form of artistic representation that extracts an abstract essence from distinctive characteristics. The result of his experiments is an entirely novel digital technique which he alone commands. Wolf U. Rabe calls these works “digital woodcuts”. It is an art form that deliberately turns our seeing habits on their head. Instead of zooming in to perceive every detail, as high-definition exhibition photography often does, we take a step backwards. All these pigment prints on canvas are sold as unique works.
